Mercer Wines at 972 Hermitage Road is a modern, family-owned boutique cellar door with a sustainability bent: organic, preservative-free, small-batch wines. It is one of the more dog-relaxed doors on Hermitage Road, with dogs generally welcome both on the sunny terrace and inside the relaxed cellar door space.

Where the dog goes. Dogs are welcome on the sun-filled terrace and outdoor seating, and are generally fine inside the modern cellar door too. Water bowls are often out and staff are good with pets, so you can choose your spot by the weather rather than leaving the dog out.

The rules. Lead on at all times and stay with your dog. A calm dog keeps the indoor welcome intact, so settle a restless one on the terrace. Bring your own bowl as backup.

What is there. The tasting is approachable and often comes with a complimentary Binnorie Dairy cheese board, which makes an easy graze. The range covers Hunter staples like Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz alongside more modern blends, with the sustainable, preservative-free angle front and centre.

Getting there. 972 Hermitage Road, open seven days 10am to 5pm, with on-site parking right in the heart of wine country.

Sunny terrace, a cheese board, and the dog can come inside if it clouds over. Easygoing stop on the Hermitage Road run.

When to go. Open daily, calmest mid-week and earlier in the day. The terrace is the pick on a fine afternoon for a relaxed tasting with the dog.
