K1 by Geoff Hardy, the cellar door most people just call K1 Wines, sits on Tynan Road at Kuitpo, a lakeside cellar door ringed by vineyards and native forest in the Adelaide Hills. It is a genuinely dog-welcoming winery, with a resident winery dog and plenty of outdoor room, which makes it an easy pairing with a Kuitpo Forest walk.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor deck, on the lawn overlooking the lake and under the birch trees, and are permitted inside the cellar door as well. There is no charge for bringing a dog. Keep yours on a lead, since this is a working winery. Water bowls are usually on hand, but bring your own treats, and a long line is handy if you want to give the dog a bit more freedom on the lawn while you taste. There is space to let a dog settle while you work through a flight.

Good to know. The setting on the lake is the headline draw, and the wines lean cool-climate, with sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet across the range. Cheese and charcuterie platters are available to go with a tasting and the waterside seating.

Getting there. It is around 45 to 60 minutes from the Adelaide CBD, in the Kuitpo Forest area. Ample free parking is on-site at the cellar door, with easy access from the car park through to the deck and lawn.

Nearby with the dogs. Kuitpo Forest and Chookarloo Campground are only a few minutes away, with on-lead forest walking trails, so a morning walk and an afternoon tasting make a natural day out. Confirm current tasting hours before you drive, as cellar door times shift by season.
