Upfield Shared Use Path

The Upfield Shared Use Path follows the Upfield railway line through Melbourne's inner north, and in Fawkner it is a straightforward sealed path beside a working train line. Dogs must be on a leash the whole time.

Lead rules

Merri-bek City Council's local laws require dogs to be held on a chain, cord or leash while on a shared path or within 1 metre of one. There are no exceptions along the corridor, so keep the lead on and short when bikes come past.

The walk

The surface is sealed asphalt throughout. Around Fawkner you walk beside the active railway line, through an industrial stretch softened by station landscaping.

Recent upgrades have added solar lighting along the path.

Max: Trains, bikes and a narrow corridor add up to a lot going on. A short lead and a dog that ignores passing cyclists make this far easier.

Make a day of it

For an off-lead run once the path walk is done, Moomba Park Dog Off Leash Area is the local choice.

When to go

This is a practical, out-the-door walk rather than a scenic outing. It suits calm dogs that are used to trains and bikes. Bring water for the dog.
