Cussen Park

What locals call the Tatura Wetlands is Cussen Park, a 33 hectare bushland and wetland reserve on Ross Street at the northern edge of Tatura. Its flat, smooth loop is open to dogs on lead.

Lead rules

Dogs must be on a leash at all times, and Greater Shepparton City Council manages the park with the Tatura community. Dogs are also kept out of the wetland ponds to protect the birdlife.

The walk

The paths are wide and flat, finished in fine compacted bluestone with some boardwalk sections. That makes it an easy walk for dogs and owners of any fitness.

The reserve was once a wastewater treatment site and is now thick with native plants and birds, including herons and spoonbills. A forested loop gives dense shade, while other stretches are open.

Water and parking

An older drinking fountain stands on site, and bins are provided for dog waste. The Ross Street car park is flat and firm, with direct access to the paths.

Max: Keep the lead short near the ponds. Dogs are not allowed in the water, and the edges can get muddy.

Who it suits

A good pick for older dogs or an unhurried walk. On hot days, stick to the forested loop and bring extra water.
