Black Creek Walkway

Black Creek bends around the edge of Stanford Merthyr, and this walkway follows its banks on a natural earth and gravel track. It is a quiet local stroll rather than a big hike, and dogs stay on lead.

Lead rules

Cessnock City Council requires dogs to be on a lead in public places unless an area is signed for off-lead exercise. The walkway is not one of those areas.

The walk

Nobody has published an official length, so walk as far as suits your dog and turn back. Expect creekside vegetation and the birds that live along the banks.

Shade depends on the trees beside the creek, so it comes and goes. Parking is informal, on the roadside near the local access points.

There are no dog water stations along the track, so bring a bottle and a bowl.

Make a day of it

If your dog still needs a proper run afterwards, the Stanford Merthyr Park Leash Free Area is the local off-lead option.

When to go

Cool mornings suit a creek walk best. It is a good fit for calm dogs that would rather sniff than sprint.
