Big Swamp Walkway

Big Swamp is a paperbark wetland in South Bunbury, and its outer path makes a flat, easy loop full of birdlife. Dogs are welcome on a leash on the outer paths, but they are not allowed on the timber boardwalks.

The walk

The outer trail is flat bitumen, roughly two to two and a half kilometres, and easy going for dogs of any age and for prams.

It skirts the swamp, where you'll see waterbirds, paperbark trees and wildlife hides.

Lead rules

The City of Bunbury manages the reserve. Dogs must stay leashed on the outer paths.

They are banned from the boardwalks and the inner conservation areas, which protect the wetland wildlife.

Max: When the path meets a boardwalk, that's where we turn around. Stick to the bitumen.

Getting started

Parking is near the main trailheads, including off Prince Philip Drive. Drinking water, bins and shaded picnic shelters are clustered around the picnic and playground areas.

Carry a bottle for the dog on the loop itself.

Go early in the morning, when the birds are busiest and the path is cool. The flat surface suits senior dogs.
