Riverway

The Riverway paths follow the Ross River on Townsville's western side, and the river itself is why dog owners come. At nearby Apex Park an off-lead zone runs right down to the water.

Leads and the off-lead area

Townsville City Council requires dogs on lead along the main pedestrian and shared concrete paths. Off-lead play is only allowed inside signed dog areas, such as the one at Apex Park.

Dogs are not allowed in the built swimming lagoons or other man-made swimming areas of the Riverway complex.

The walk

The paths are smooth, flat concrete, easy for walking, running and mobility aids. You get open views of the river, native trees, parkland and waterbirds, with boardwalks lifting you above the banks in places.

Water and shade

Mature trees shade the green spaces, and bins are spread through the parkland. Apex Park, off Riverway Drive, has a sealed car park.

Dogs can reach the river at semi-fenced access points, but read the water safety signs before yours goes in.

Max: The lagoons look tempting on a hot day, but they are off limits to dogs. Save the swim for the river access point.

Make a day of it

Jabiru Park Dog Park in Condon has a fenced off-lead area, and De Lokal in Thuringowa Central is handy for a coffee afterwards.

Go early or late, when the Townsville heat eases. The flat paths suit older dogs, and water-loving dogs will want the Apex Park end.
