Pioneer River Foreshore

The Pioneer River Foreshore walk follows the river through West Mackay and into Mackay on a sealed shared path. Dogs are welcome on a leash the whole way, and it is flat enough for any fitness level.

The walk

The path is part of the wider Bluewater Trail network, with grassy riverbanks, urban wetlands and birdlife along the route. It links to the Sandfly Creek wetlands and other paths for a longer outing.

Shade comes from scattered mature trees, with exposed stretches between them. Bins are at the access points and trailheads, and there is parking off River Street.

Leads and water

Dogs must stay on a leash along the path, which Mackay Regional Council manages. Dog water stations are scarce on the long stretches, so bring a bottle and bowl.

Make a day of it

For an off-lead finish, Gooseponds Dog Park is fully fenced, and Botanic Gardens Cafe is a pleasant stop in West Mackay.

When to go

In summer, go early or late, when the exposed sections are cooler. It suits runners and daily walkers after a steady on-lead route with plenty to sniff.
