O'Briens Crossing

O'Briens Crossing is the day visitor area at the northern end of Lerderderg State Park, near Blackwood, and a rare legal way into the park with a dog. Parks Victoria allows dogs here and on the surrounding northern tracks, but they must be on a lead at all times.

The terrain

Tracks leave the picnic area along the Lerderderg River, framed by tall gums and old gold-mining relics. Expect natural dirt and rock, uneven footing and some steep pinches in the gorge country.

The canopy is thick, so shade is rarely a problem.

Water and facilities

The river runs beside the picnic and camping areas, but it can run low or dry up in summer and there is no treated tap water. Bring drinking water for the dog.

There are drop toilets, picnic tables and day parking. Bins are not provided, so carry out every bag, and note that campfires and barbecues are not permitted at the picnic area.

Max: Rocky, steep ground is hard on soft paws and old hips. Match the route to your dog's fitness, and keep the lead on near the river.

When to go

Spring and autumn suit it best, when the climbs are cooler and the river is less likely to be dry. It is a walk for fit, sure-footed dogs rather than a gentle stroll.
