Jezzine Barracks Precinct

Up on the Kissing Point headland, at the northern end of The Strand, Jezzine Barracks mixes military history with big views over Cleveland Bay. Dogs can come along on a lead, which makes it a good extension to a foreshore walk.

Leads and signed areas

Townsville City Council manages the precinct. Dogs must stay on a lead on the public walkways and under effective control.

Some signed areas, such as certain playgrounds and sensitive cultural sites, are off limits to dogs altogether.

The walk

Paved walkways and a timber coastal boardwalk lead past historic military installations and Indigenous public art. The path links straight into the coastal walkway running from The Strand toward Rowes Bay.

Picnic shelters and shade structures give some cover, but the lawns and headland are open to the sun. Toilets, bins and drinking taps are on hand around the parklands and boardwalk.

Parking surrounds the precinct, though it fills fast in the early morning and late afternoon.

Max: Read the signs as you go. Parts of the precinct are closed to dogs, even on a lead.

Make a day of it

From the headland you look straight across to Magnetic Island, where Island Spice Cafe in Nelly Bay makes a good stop on a ferry day.

With little shade on the headland, the cooler months are best. The flat paths and boardwalk suit older dogs.
