Nightcliff Foreshore

Darwin's favourite sunset stroll runs along the Nightcliff Foreshore, a sealed shared path with the sea on one side and tall rows of palms on the other. Dogs are welcome the whole way, as long as they stay on a lead.

Lead rules

The City of Darwin looks after the foreshore and requires dogs on a lead no longer than two metres, under effective control. Extra restrictions apply around the playground and barbecue areas and the market zone, so keep your dog close as you pass them.

The walk

The path runs for roughly 2.5 km between Nightcliff Jetty and the Rapid Creek footbridge. It is sealed, shared with cyclists and passes green parkland, so keep to one side.

Water, shade and parking

Pepsi: Top up at the fountains before the open stretches, because they heat up quickly once the sun is high.

Drinking fountains and water points are spread through the foreshore parklands, and there are toilets and showers open around the clock. Parking bays sit at intervals along Casuarina Drive, including near the jetty.

Mature trees shade the grassy sections, but the exposed coastal parts of the path get hot in the middle of the day.

When to go

Early morning or around sunset is the pick, when the path is cooler and there is a breeze off the water. The flat, sealed surface suits older dogs and anyone pushing a pram.
