Mount Ninderry walking track

Mount Ninderry Summit Walk is a short, steep climb to two lookout platforms on the Sunshine Coast hinterland fringe, near Yandina. The reward is a full panorama taking in the coastline, Mount Coolum and the Maroochy River Valley, and dogs are welcome to tackle it with you on leash.

The walk. An up-and-back track of roughly 30 minutes to one hour return, graded easy-to-moderate. The lower sections move steadily uphill before the rocky steps near the summit. It is not a loop, so whatever you climb you also descend. Trail signage at the start marks the route to the east and west lookouts.

Leash status. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Sunshine Coast Council is updating its pet and dog rules from 3 July 2026, with changes affecting environmental areas, so check the council website or current signage at the trailhead for any prohibited-area updates before you go. Clean up after your dog immediately, and keep them close when passing other walkers on the narrow sections.

Water. No taps and no toilets on site. Bring enough water for both you and your dog, especially in the warmer months when the exposed sections heat up.

Hazards. Heat and exposure are the main concerns. The climb is uphill with limited shade, making early morning or late afternoon the safest windows for dogs. The rocky steps require care on both the ascent and descent.

Getting there. Drive via Nambour Connection Road into Yandina, then take Farrell Street onto Ninderry Road. A free gravel car park sits at the trailhead. There is no practical public transport option, so a personal vehicle is needed.

Nearby with the dogs. The trailhead is close to Yandina. After the walk, head into town for a coffee at Gun Cotton Coffee Roasters, Kismet Tonic & Espresso or At Odds Cafe Yandina. If your dog still has energy, Dog Park Yandina offers an off-leash alternative nearby.

When to go. Early morning or late afternoon avoids the heat of the climb and the weekend crowds. The trail is busiest on weekend mornings with locals doing their daily hike, and quietest mid-morning to early afternoon on weekdays. A good pick for reasonably fit dogs and owners who want a short climb with a big payoff.
