Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail

The Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail leaves the western edge of Ballarat and heads out through Haddon, Smythesdale and Pittong to Skipton. Dogs are welcome for the full distance, always on a leash.

Leads and managers

Three councils share the trail. They are the City of Ballarat, Golden Plains Shire and Corangamite Shire, and the lead rule is the same across all of them.

The walk

Near town the path is concrete, then it turns to fine compacted gravel for the rural stretches. The going is easy, and you can make the walk as short or long as you like.

Out along the old line are open grazing land, bush reserves and gold-mining relics. Further on is a restored timber trestle bridge.

Pair it with

Back in the city centre, Hop Temple is a dog-friendly spot for a drink after the walk.

When to go

It suits dogs that like a steady, even pace. Bring water for the dog, as the rural sections are long.
