Kuranda Village and River Walk

Kuranda is a rainforest village above Cairns, and the walk a dog can legally do here is the village and the Jumrum Creek circuit, not the falls. Dogs are banned outright on the Barron Falls, or Din Din, lookout tracks and anywhere inside Barron Gorge National Park, so treat the 8km AllTrails route as a human itinerary. What is left is still a good rainforest walk, and an unusual one.

The walk. On lead you can wander the village streets and the Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets, then pick up the Jumrum Creek Walk, which links with the Jungle Walk to make a circuit of roughly an hour through rainforest and along the creek. That section sits in Jumrum Creek Conservation Park, managed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service jointly with the Djabugay people, and it is one of the few Queensland conservation parks that expressly allows dogs on lead.

The rules. Leads are compulsory in the village, in the markets and on the Jumrum Creek walk. Dogs cannot enter Birdworld, Koala Gardens or the Butterfly Sanctuary. The hard boundary is Barron Gorge National Park, including every track to the Barron Falls lookout, where domestic animals are not permitted at all. There is no leashed exception and no quick look with the dog in tow.

Hazards. Cassowaries move through this rainforest, along with other native wildlife drawn to the creek. Keep your dog close and under control, for the wildlife's sake as much as your own.

Getting there. Kuranda is 30 to 40 minutes from Cairns via the Kuranda Range Road, and you will need to drive. Dogs are not allowed on the Kuranda Scenic Railway or the Skyrail unless they are registered assistance animals, so the two famous ways up the range are closed to you. There is free and paid parking in the village, including near the Original Markets, and the Visitor Information Centre is on Coondoo Street. The Original Markets put out water bowls and have shaded paved walkways.

Nearby with the dogs. The village cafe options are few but reliable: Birdwing and Vittoria's Emporium both take dogs on lead outside.

When to go. Wednesday to Friday, arriving before 10am, because the village fills when the tourist trains come in. Good for an easy morning rainforest walk on lead, and not the trip to make if seeing the falls together is the point.
