Vittoria’s Emporium

Vittoria's Emporium is a small coffee stall inside the Kuranda Original Markets at 13 Therwine Street, set in a shaded courtyard that doubles as one of the easiest dog stops in the village. It suits the traveller who has walked the market lanes with a dog on lead and wants a genuinely good coffee in a seat, rather than another takeaway cup.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor courtyard seating under the trees, which is the whole seating arrangement here, and leashed dogs can generally walk the open-air and covered walkways of the Kuranda markets. Keep the lead short and your dog settled between the stalls: the lanes are compact and crowded at peak tourist times, and some tightly packed craft stalls will ask you to wait at the threshold. Water bowls are often out at the shopfronts, but in the tropical heat carry a collapsible bowl and water as backup.

The coffee and the markets

The stall has a local reputation for some of the best coffee in the village, and the food is simple and well-liked, falafels in particular. It is a coffee-and-a-sit stop rather than a full meal venue, which pairs neatly with a lap of the markets. Typical hours are 8am to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday, with stallholder hours shifting around market days and Tuesdays closed, so check before you build a trip around it.

Getting there and parking

Kuranda sits on the edge of the Atherton Tablelands, reached from Cairns by the range road up through Smithfield. Free street parking is available on Therwine Street and the nearby streets, and the markets are a short walk from the village centre, so the car-to-coffee leg with a dog is easy.

For a longer leg-stretch, the Kuranda Village and River Walk starts from the village and is dog-friendly on lead. Birdwing Kuranda is the other dog-friendly cafe option in the village if the courtyard is full. Note that the bird and butterfly sanctuaries nearby do not allow pets inside, so plan those visits for a dog-free day.
