Historic Rail Trail

Tailem Bend's Historic Rail Trail is a town walk rather than a bush track, linking heritage buildings and landmarks from the railway era. Dogs are welcome on lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Coorong District Council requires dogs to be leashed on footpaths, streets and general reserves. The exception is the fenced Tailem Bend Dog Park on Railway Terrace, where dogs can run off lead under effective control.

The walk

You stay on ordinary bitumen and concrete footpaths, so it is easy going. Interpretive signs along the way share stories from longtime residents about the town's railway past.

Street parking is easy to find around the railway station and community centre precinct. Pet water points along the way are limited, so bring water for the dog.

Make a day of it

The Tailem Bend Dog Park on Railway Terrace is handy for an off-lead break. Afterwards, Tailem Bend Bakery makes an easy lunch stop.

Who it suits

It suits a slow, sniffy dog and an owner who likes reading the signs. It is flat and short on effort, so older dogs will cope well.
