Pet policy
Dogs on lead at all times on the lake trails, and not allowed in the Discovery Centre (DBCA).
Herdsman Lake Regional Park wraps a big inner Perth wetland, and its walking loop of about 7 kilometres is one of the best birdwatching strolls in the city. Dogs are welcome on the trails, but only on lead, at all times.
Lead rules
The park is managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions with the local councils. Dogs must be on lead and under control everywhere, and they cannot go inside the Discovery Centre.
The walk
Paved shared paths make up most of the loop, with limestone sections and boardwalk in places. Look out for black swans and purple swamphens in the rushes, and paperbark woodland along the way.
Shade comes and goes, with the Olive Seymour Boardwalk among the cooler stretches. Water for dogs is scarce on the loop, so carry plenty.
Max: Cyclists and runners share these paths. A short lead keeps everyone happy.
Getting started
Parking is near the Discovery Centre and in bays around the lake's edge. Grab a coffee after at We Wabi Coffee in Osborne Park.
When to go
Early morning for birds and cooler air. The flat, even paths suit older dogs.
