Flagstaff Rotary Walk

Flagstaff Rotary Walk is an easy-grade bushland trail through Minkarra Park in Happy Valley, with loop options running from a 400m accessible circuit up to about 2.3km. River red gums, blue gums and views toward Happy Valley Reservoir make it one of the southern suburbs' better short dog walks.

The walk

Tracks are well-maintained dirt with some boardwalk sections and only gentle rises, so the walk suits everything from a leg-stretch to a proper loop through native bushland. The northern section is more heavily forested and generally quieter than the southern end near the skate park. Longer options exist by combining the connected park sections if you want extra distance.

Leash status

Off-leash walking is allowed in the designated sections of the park provided your dog stays under effective control, and rules differ between sections, so read the signs as you move through. Leash up in the car park areas and on the paved playground pathways, where dogs are not welcome close to the equipment. If you would rather skip the variables, the park's fully fenced Minkarra dog park sits alongside the trails with separate large and small dog zones.

Water and watch-outs

Water taps are available in the southern section. This is a conservation-value area in parts, so keep dogs from disturbing wildlife, and snake activity picks up over summer. Keep dogs in sight on warm days, stick to the boardwalks and avoid the long grass off-track through the warmer months.

Max: summer changes the risk maths here. The snakes own the long grass, so if it is hot, we walk the boardwalk and the open track, nothing else.

Getting there

Main parking sits off Manning Road near the Minkarra skate park, roughly 30 minutes from the Adelaide CBD via Manning Road or Black Road and Reservoir Drive. Bus routes run along nearby Happy Valley Drive; check Adelaide Metro for current stops. The park also has a playground, BMX track and outdoor gym gear if kids are coming, with public toilets in the southern section and benches along the main trails. Waste bags are provided but run out, so carry spares.
