Greenough River Walk Trail

Pelicans, egrets and calm river water set the tone on the Greenough River Walk Trail, a 17-kilometre loop that meets the river mouth at Cape Burney. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

The City of Greater Geraldton manages the Greenough River conservation area, and dogs must stay on a lead for the whole trail.

It is a conservation area with plenty of birdlife, so a short lead keeps the dog on the track and out of the dunes.

The walk

The path is a hardened bush track rather than pavement. It follows the river through coastal vegetation and sand dunes, with the water in view much of the way.

Seventeen kilometres is a long day for most dogs. You do not have to finish the loop, and a shorter out-and-back along the river still gives you the water and the birds.

Pepsi: Bring plenty of water for the dog. It is a long trail, so do not count on finding a tap.

When to go

Go early in the warmer months, as the bush track and dunes heat up fast. Cooler seasons suit a longer walk, and it is best for fit dogs that are happy on a lead around birds.
