Cantonment Hill

Cantonment Hill rises above Fremantle with views over the harbour, the Swan River and the Indian Ocean. It's a lookout walk worth doing with your dog on lead, and the history on top is a bonus.

Lead rules

The hill is urban bushland and a Bush Forever conservation site, and the City of Fremantle requires dogs on lead here. There is no off-leash area on the hill.

The walk

Paths are a mix of paved and limestone track, passing old military installations and native plants. Whadjuk interpretive signs tell the story of the hill as Dwernda Weelardinup, the place of the dingo spirit.

Shade comes and goes, with trees and grassy sections lower down but exposed paths near the top. Parking is on the street around the base.

Max: The top is exposed. Carry water and a bowl, and skip the middle of a summer day.

Two Dogs Laughing in Beaconsfield is a cafe stop nearby, as is Cafe Lumos in White Gum Valley.

When to go

Cooler parts of the day suit this one, given the exposed upper paths. It's a good fit for dogs happy on a lead and owners who like a view with their walk.
