Federation Hill - Base Trail

Federation Hill's Base Trail skirts the foot of the hill on the edge of West Wodonga, with wide views over Wodonga, Albury and the ranges beyond. Dogs are welcome but must stay on a lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Wodonga Council and Parklands Albury Wodonga both require dogs on leash on the trail. Eastern grey kangaroos and plenty of birds use the hill, so a short lead helps.

The walk

The track is wide and fairly even, with gentle ups and downs on compacted earth and gravel. Gates and chicanes at the entries take a little navigating with a dog.

It backs onto suburban streets, so it works as a quick walk from home. Park in the small bays or on nearby streets such as McCulloch Crescent and Prendergast Street.

Water and shade

Shade is scarce along the base, as the trail crosses open grassy woodland and exposed slopes. There is no reliable water, so carry enough for the dog and take bags home with you.

Max: Kangaroos graze on this hill. Keep the lead short so a sudden chase never gets started.

When to go

In the warmer months go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Daintree Cafe in West Wodonga is handy for a coffee afterwards.
