Chelsworth Park Loop

Chelsworth Park Loop circles one of Banyule's big riverside reserves in Ivanhoe East, running past sports ovals, wetlands and billabongs to the Yarra. The open grass is off-lead, which is why local dogs treat it as home ground.

Leads and the off-lead area

Banyule City Council lets dogs off lead in Chelsworth Park's open areas when organised sport is not being played, as long as they stay under effective control. Within 5 metres of shared paths, playgrounds and barbecues, the lead goes back on.

Next door, the bushland tracks of Wilson Reserve are on-lead, so clip up before you cross into them.

The walk

The loop mixes dirt, gravel and short boardwalk sections through floodplain woodland beside the Yarra River. Old river red gums give shade in patches, but the sports ovals are open and hot in summer.

There are bins at the entries and parking off The Boulevard near Irvine Road. Water is patchy, so bring a bottle for the dog.

Make a day of it

Finish with a coffee at Be Good Café in Ivanhoe East, or add another off-lead run at Hays Paddock Dog Off Leash Area in Kew East.

When to go

Check for club games or training on the ovals before planning an off-lead session. Early mornings are cooler under the gums and busy with birdlife on the wetlands.
