Catherine Freeman Walk

Mangroves, tidal wetlands and shorebirds line the Catherine Freeman Walk, part of Mackay's Bluewater Trail along the Pioneer River near the Botanic Gardens. Dogs can come, on lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Mackay Regional Council does not treat any of this walk as an off-lead area. Keep your dog on lead on the paths and boardwalks.

Dog walking in the river conservation sections may be restricted in the warmer months, traditionally October to April, to protect nesting shorebirds. Follow any signs you see.

The walk

The route mixes paved concrete paths with raised boardwalks over the wetlands and mangroves. River breezes help, but shade is sparse and the sun is fierce on the open sections.

Drinking fountains are spaced out, so carry water and a bowl. Bins sit at the main access points.

Getting started

Park for free at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens and walk out from there. Dogs are not allowed in the gardens' formal playgrounds, lagoons or the Tropical Shade Garden.

Make a day of it

Finish with a coffee at the Botanic Gardens Cafe.

Early mornings and late afternoons are the time to go, since there is little cover from the heat. The smooth surface suits dogs of any age.
