Railway Reserves Heritage Trail

The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail follows old railway formations up into the Perth Hills, starting at Bellevue next to Midland and running through Mundaring toward Wooroloo. Dogs are welcome on lead, with one big exception.

Lead rules

Dogs must be on lead at all times. They are not allowed on the section through John Forrest National Park, so choose a segment that avoids it.

The Shire of Mundaring coordinates the trail, which also crosses DBCA-managed land.

The walk

Surfaces are coarse gravel, fine gravel and compacted earth. You pass historic sidings, old timber bridges and jarrah forest, with views over the Swan Coastal Plain.

The full network is far too long for one dog walk, so drive to a trailhead and pick a shorter segment. Parking is spread along the route near road crossings and towns.

Jarrah canopy shades much of it, but cleared sections are exposed. There are taps at some town hubs and picnic areas, so carry water between towns.

Max: Check where the John Forrest National Park section starts before you set out. That is where dogs have to turn back.

Make a day of it

Back in Midland, Love Avenue Cafe and The 7th Ave Bar & Restaurant are options after the walk.

When to go

Cooler months suit the exposed sections best. Short, shaded segments work well for older dogs.
