Butts Reserve

Butts Reserve is a free bush camping ground on the western edge of Maldon, sitting at the base of Mount Tarrengower. It is the uncommon dog-friendly stay that costs nothing: tents, caravans and RVs can all camp here overnight with a dog, in a natural bushland block on the doorstep of one of Victoria's best-preserved gold rush towns.

Dogs are welcome to stay overnight with campers, with no breed or size restrictions listed. The catch is the lead: dogs must be kept on a lead and under control at all times within the reserve, partly because kangaroos and birdlife move through the camping area, and partly because it is a shared open site. Keep your dog clear of any active prospecting areas nearby, and check the signage on arrival for temporary restrictions or fire bans, which bite hardest over summer. Because this is a community-run free camp rather than a staffed park, the on-ground signage is the authority if anything changes.

The camp itself

Expect a rustic bush camp rather than a manicured holiday park: flushing toilets, fire pits, picnic tables and shade spread across the reserve. Water taps are listed on site, but the rural supply can be unreliable, so bring your own. Kangaroos graze through at dusk, which is a real reason the lead rule matters. Popular with travellers passing through the goldfields, it stays quiet outside peak periods and the historic township is a short walk away.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at the corner of O'Neil Street and Parkins Reef Road, Maldon, VIC 3463, just off the C282. Free gravel and unsealed parking spots are spread throughout the camping area, so you can generally pull up close to where you set up. Maldon is roughly 40 minutes from Bendigo and 15 minutes from Castlemaine.

While you're out there

Maldon's historic main street is an easy leash-on walk, with cafes offering outdoor seating. For a meal or a pint, The Kangaroo Hotel and Gold Exchange Cafe Restaurant both sit in town. If a free camp turns out not to be your style, the Maldon Caravan and Camping Park is the more serviced option nearby.
