Moana Caravan Park

Moana Caravan Park is a straightforward, budget caravan and camping stop on the Bruce Highway at Alligator Creek, south of Mackay. It is dog-friendly on the camping and caravan sites, and it is the kind of park you pick for an easy overnight break on a long haul rather than a destination stay.

Dogs at the park

Dogs are welcome on powered and unpowered caravan and tent sites, which tend to be large and grassy. They are generally not permitted inside villas or other indoor units, with one exception: the park's Holiday House allows dogs, subject to a cleaning fee. The rule that catches people out is movement: dogs must stay under control and are not to be walked loose around the park grounds, so the lead goes on for every trip to the amenities block or camp kitchen.

Max: pack the lead even for a quick trip to the camp kitchen. This park is fine with dogs on site but strict about loose walking around the grounds.

The vibe

Guests describe large sites, a camp kitchen, friendly managers and a quiet, no-frills atmosphere. This is a working traveller's park: easy pull-in access off the highway, powered sites for vans and motorhomes, and enough space that a dog on its own site has room to settle.

Getting there

The park sits directly off the Bruce Highway at Alligator Creek, an easy stop for anyone running the Mackay corridor between Sarina and the city. Sarina is the nearest town for fuel, supplies and a proper meal out.

Make a day of it

For an off-lead stretch on the road south, Apex Park Off-Leash Dog Park at Sarina is a short drive away. If you want a base with more of a town around it, Sarina Palms Caravan Village and Tropicana Caravan Park are the alternatives in Sarina itself.
