Sarina Beach Off Leash Dog Area

Sarina Beach Off Leash Dog Area is a sandy, beach-adjacent zone running from near the surf club north towards the mangroves at Sarina Beach, roughly 10 kilometres east of Sarina town in the Mackay region. The defining factor for any visit is the time window: dogs are only off-leash from 5am to 8am and 5pm to 8pm daily, and leashed outside those hours.

The dog setup

Even inside the morning and evening windows, dogs must stay under effective voice command, because nothing is fenced on the water side or the boundaries; this is an open beach suited to dogs with reliable recall. Pick up immediately, and while waste bag stations and bins sit at the main access points, carry your own as backup. Dogs stay leashed on the paved pathway and picnic areas near the beach access points, and leashed at all times in the surrounding grassy parks. Boundaries are signposted at the access, so read the signage on arrival rather than trusting memory.

Time the tides

Mid to low tide is the sweet spot, opening a wide sweep of firm sand and shallow water for swimming. At high tide the usable sand shrinks hard against the dune line and the space feels cramped. Mackay's tidal range is large, so check a tide chart and match it to the 5am or 5pm window rather than assuming both work equally well.

Max: set a phone alarm for the end of your off-leash window. There is no fence to back you up here, and voice control is the only thing keeping the rules honest at 7:59am.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Owen Jenkins Drive, where free parking sits close to the sand, along with public toilets in the car park, picnic shelters and barbecue amenities. From Sarina town, take Sarina Beach Road east for 10 to 15 minutes; driving is the only realistic option, as bus services to the beach are limited.

Make a day of it

Visiting from out of town, Hay Point Country Bed & Breakfast is roughly 15 minutes away with pet-friendly accommodation, and Sarina Palms Caravan Village takes dogs on sites. Roots Collective Cafe in Sarina is the post-walk meal stop, and Apex Park Off-Leash Dog Park in town is the fenced alternative when the tide is wrong.
