South Sailor is a casual seafood restaurant and bar on Lawrence Hargrave Drive in Thirroul, about 150 metres back from the beach, on the site long known locally as Jim's Fish Cafe.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor and verandah seating. Indoor seating is generally not available for dogs, though this can vary with management on a quiet day, so it is worth booking ahead and mentioning you are bringing a dog. Staff are known to bring out a water bowl without being asked.

Known for. Fresh, locally sourced seafood and a solid fish and chips, a full licensed bar with beer, wine and cocktails, and a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with a kids' cubby.

Getting there. The address is 2/228-232 Lawrence Hargrave Drive, Thirroul. Street parking on Lawrence Hargrave Drive is tight at peak times; there is more parking behind the retail strip on the eastern side, a short walk away.

McCauleys Beach, the off-leash stretch just south, is an easy add-on before or after a meal, and Thirroul Beach itself runs a seasonal on-leash time-share arrangement for dogs.

When to go. Outdoor tables are first-come, so aim for an early lunch or an early dinner ahead of the weekend rush. Good for a relaxed seafood stop after a beach walk.
