Altitude 1148 Dining

Altitude 1148 sits at the top of Bulli Pass in the Southern Gateway Centre on the Princes Highway, with a sweeping view over the Illawarra coastline that justifies the name. It runs breakfast through dinner, and dogs are welcome on the outdoor balcony, on lead, while the main dining room stays people only.

The dog setup

The balcony is the dog-friendly zone: outdoor seating on lead with the coast laid out below. Indoor seating is not available to dogs, so this is fair-weather dining. The elevated balcony can get breezy and cool even on decent days, so a wind-tolerant dog does better than a thin-coated one, and it is worth bringing your own water bowl rather than assuming one will appear. Keep the lead short up there; it is a working dining space with a drop-away view, not a dog run.

Worth knowing

The menu is unusually broad: modern Australian breakfast plates, burgers, fresh seafood and salads, plus a full Indian section with butter chicken and rich curries, and the kitchen is 100 percent halal certified with solid vegetarian and gluten-free coverage. Hours run 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, extending to 8pm on Friday and Saturday, with breakfast served until midday. The rating history is mixed, so go for the view and pick dishes accordingly. Gelato Emporium next door covers dessert.

Getting there and parking

The venue is on the Princes Highway at the top of Bulli Pass, an easy stop if you are driving the escarpment between Sydney and Wollongong, and there is parking directly outside the Southern Gateway Centre.

Close by with the dogs

Bulli Beach below the pass is an on-lead time-share beach under Wollongong City Council rules: dogs are welcome before 9am and after 6pm in summer, or after 4pm in winter, but never off lead. For proper off-lead sand, Bark at the Beach at Thirroul is just up the coast, and McCauley's Beach at Thirroul is a green-zone off-leash beach as well. Back in the suburb, 34 South Cafe is a dog-friendly coffee option and North Break Cafe is a few minutes north at Woonona.
