Gaffer Atlas Dog Park

This is the fenced off-leash dog park at Jerry Bailey Reserve in Shoalhaven Heads, a securely enclosed space where dogs can run without traffic worries. It sits within the wider reserve near the beach and inlet, alongside a skate park, pump track and picnic shelter.

The rules. The area is fully fenced with a double-gated entry, so it suits dogs still working on their recall. The one thing to watch is that the same ground is used as a junior cricket field on weekends in season, and dogs go back on-leash whenever sport is on. Keep your dog under voice control, pick up after them and use the bins provided.

What's there. Secure fencing, a double gate, water taps (a tap can sit just outside the fence, so carry a bowl), bag dispensers and bins. Seating is unshaded. The surrounding reserve adds a skate park, pump track and picnic shelter.

Getting there. Access is off Staples Street or Wagin Street, with on-street parking generally available nearby. Local Shoalhaven buses run through town.

Weekends, public holidays and the early-morning and late-afternoon slots are busiest. A weekday afternoon is the quiet option. For a longer outing, the 24-hour off-leash section of Shoalhaven Heads Beach is a short drive away, best walked at low tide.
