Moorpanyal Dog Area

Moorpanyal Dog Area is a 24/7 off-leash beach and grass reserve on the foreshore of Moorpanyal Park in North Shore, Geelong, with sandy beach access and open lawn overlooking Corio Bay. It is unfenced, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than nervous escape artists.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted 24 hours a day, every day of the week, across the foreshore area. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times since there is no fencing. Leashes are required in the designated playground and picnic areas within the park, so keep that distinction in mind as you move between zones.

Terrain and water. The beach is sandy and swimmable at high tide, but mudflats are exposed at low tide and can get messy underpaw. There are no water taps anywhere on site, so pack your own water and a bowl. Watch the cliff edges above the bay, they are close to the open grass area and not fenced off.

What's there. Parking is plentiful, including lookout bays close to the beach entrance. The park has toilets, barbecue facilities and picnic tables near the entrance, though these sit in the on-leash zone.

Getting there. The park runs along The Esplanade in North Shore. It is a short drive from the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, and North Shore railway station is about a ten-minute walk away if you are arriving by train.

Watch-outs. The foreshore catches strong wind during stormy weather, and the unfenced cliff edges are worth extra attention with young or boisterous dogs.

Nearby with the dogs. Ellen's Cafe North Shore is a short walk away and welcomes dogs in its footpath seating, a solid option for a coffee after the beach. Further afield, The Pickers Union in North Geelong and No. 42 in Rippleside both have shaded or courtyard dog seating within a short drive.

Best visited early morning on weekdays for a quiet run. Weekends and sunny afternoons bring families and get busier. Good for confident dogs that swim and come back on command, less ideal for nervous or bolt-prone dogs given the lack of fencing.
