Jacana Valley Dog Off Leash Area sits within the wider Jacana Valley parklands off Sunset Boulevard, a natural, open stretch of green corridor rather than a manicured park. The upside for dog owners is space: open fields and surrounding walking trails with room to let a dog properly run.

The dog setup

Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times, be at least six months old and fully vaccinated, and you are limited to two dogs per person. Keep dogs on lead in the car park and on paths within 5 metres of the paved trails, carry a leash for each dog, and clean up after them. Aggressive dogs are not permitted. Council also recommends children under 14 not supervise dogs off-leash, and children under 5 stay out of the fenced area.

Max: stick close to the paths near the car park on lead. The 5 metre buffer rule catches people out when they let dogs off too early.

Worth knowing

Facilities are basic: some seating and natural shade rather than built shelters, no water on tap of record, so bring your own water and waste bags. The ground turns muddy after heavy rain, which is the main reason to time a visit around the weather.

Getting there and parking

Parking is along Sunset Boulevard and nearby residential streets, and Jacana Station on the Craigieburn line is a short walk away, so it pairs easily with a train trip.

While you're out there

The fenced oval at Jacana Reserve is the other off-leash option in the suburb, and 24 Emus on the suburb's edge is a dog-friendly coffee stop for the walk home. For a fully fenced yard nearby, Bent Street Dog Park in Moonee Ponds works too.

When to go

Weekday mid-mornings are the quietest window; weekend mornings and weekday early evenings draw the most locals. Give the ground a day or so to dry out after heavy rain before expecting a clean run.
