Harris Park - Dog Off Leash Area

Harris Park sits on Highfields Road just north of Toowoomba, and its dog draw is a fully fenced off-leash area on the southern side of the park. The rest of the reserve stays on-lead, so the fenced section works as a secure island: dogs with patchy recall get a proper run behind a perimeter, and the wider park still takes the leashed warm-up walk.

The dog setup

The fenced southern enclosure is a large open grassed run with drinking water on site, bins, seating for owners and accessible parking nearby. There is room for a proper ball throw, and the run is big enough that a nervous dog can hold space away from the pack when it fills. Shade is thin across the enclosure, so carry water and time visits around the heat even though taps work.

Toowoomba Regional Council's off-leash rules apply: off-lead is only inside the fenced southern section, dogs stay on lead walking through the general park to reach it, and once inside they must remain within sight and under effective control with a current registration tag on. Pick up promptly and bin it. Bitches on heat and dogs with a history of aggression are not permitted in council off-leash spaces.

Max: Early morning is the sweet spot here. The fence holds the shade longer on the western side and the regulars' dogs all know the routine.

Worth knowing

Early mornings and late afternoons are the busy windows, heaviest on weekends, while weekday mornings and early afternoons stay quiet. Highfields has become one of Toowoomba's fastest growing suburbs, so expect the park to be popular with new residents. Michael Park's off-leash space sits about a kilometre away if you want a second option on the same outing.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 22-38 Highfields Road, reached easily off the New England Highway, about 15 minutes north of Toowoomba's centre. On-site parking is accessible and sits close to the fenced section. Public transport through Highfields is limited, so driving is the practical option, and the highway strip means coffee is never far.

Make a day of it

The Michael Park Off Leash Dog Park is the nearby change of scenery, and for coffee the Chocolate Cottage in Highfields welcomes leashed dogs on its lawn.
