Open riverside grass with its own car park. Wallen Road Reserve is at 4 Wallen Road, Hawthorn, a large open green space beside the Yarra with plenty of room to run. It is a designated off-leash reserve and, unlike its neighbours, has a dedicated car park off Wallen Road, which makes it the practical parking base for this stretch of the river.

The rules. Dogs may be off-lead within the designated area under effective voice or hand control, and must be leashed until they are inside it. Keep dogs at least 10m from playgrounds and 30m from BBQs, picnic areas and sports in progress. Bring your own bags and clean up. Restricted-breed dogs must be muzzled and leashed, and greyhounds must stay on-lead at all times, even in the off-lead area.

What is there. The draw is the open grass for running and casual gatherings; there is no fenced small-dog section. Public toilets on this stretch are shared with the adjoining Fairview Park.

Getting there. The car park is directly off Wallen Road. Trams 70 and 75 stop near the Power Street and Riversdale Road intersection, and the Yarra River trails connect in on foot.

When to go. Busiest before 10am and from about 4pm to dusk; weekdays are quieter than weekends. Midday midweek gives the most open space for dogs that would rather avoid a crowd.
