H.A Smith Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

A handy 24/7 off-leash patch, but hemmed in by traffic. H.A. Smith Reserve sits at the corner of Camberwell Road and Weir Street (31A-39A Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East). The off-leash area uses the open grass and is available around the clock, which makes it a convenient quick-run spot for locals. The catch is that it is unfenced and close to busy roads and the Monash Freeway.

The rules. The off-leash area is open 24/7, but dogs must be under effective voice control and on-lead outside the designated zone. Maximum two dogs per person. Dogs must stay at least 10m from the playground. Bins are provided but bag dispensers are not stocked, so bring your own.

What is there. There is a water tap with a bowl, public toilets and a playground nearby, plus outdoor fitness equipment. Seating and picnic tables exist, though they are limited right at the off-leash area.

Getting there. Street parking is on Gardiner Road. The number 72 tram runs along Camberwell Road, and freeway access is close.

Watch-outs. Unfenced and bordered by heavy traffic. High-drive dogs need reliable recall to stay on the grass and off the road.

When to go. Weekday mornings (roughly 7 to 8.30am), early evenings (4.30 to 6pm) and weekends are the busy windows. Late morning or mid-afternoon midweek is quietest.
