Coate Park Dog Off Leash Area

Coate Park is a quiet, bush-like reserve on Yarraford Avenue in Alphington, sloping down to the Yarra River behind the Chandler Highway. It is a Yarra City Council park with a semi-secluded feel: unsealed dirt tracks winding through mature native trees, river access for a paddle, and a diagonal split between one half that is off-lead and the riverside half that is on-lead.

The dog setup

This is a shared reserve, not a fenced dog park. Onsite signage maps the boundary between the off-lead section and the riverside on-lead half, so read it before you unclip. Under Yarra City Council rules, dogs stay on-lead within 5 metres of shared paths and within 10 metres of picnic and play facilities, all dogs must be council registered, and you carry a lead and bags at all times. The park is a designated environmental corridor, so wildlife stays unchased.

Max: the Yarra borders the park and can rise and run fast after heavy rain. If your dog swims, keep them in the shallows and well out of any current.

The vibe

Think calm, leafy stroll with river views rather than a social off-lead paddock. Weekend mornings and weekday evenings draw the most dogs; weekday mid-morning and early afternoon is when you get the reserve nearly to yourselves. The terrain slopes and is steep in sections, which adds a bit of work to the loop.

Getting there and parking

The park is off Yarraford Avenue near the Chandler Highway. Street parking around Coate Avenue is very limited and fills during the morning dog-walk peak, so you may need a nearby residential street. Alphington Station on the Mernda line is roughly a 1.2 kilometre walk away. There is a bin at the main entrance and little else in the way of facilities.

Close by with the dogs

For a proper off-lead run, the Pitcher Park Dog Off Leash Area is the bigger Alphington option, and the Darebin Parklands trail is the classic Yarra-side walk nearby. A fully fenced alternative is the Fairfield Park Fenced Dog Park. Afterwards, the Area52 Cafe near the station and Hoppa and Joe in Fairfield both welcome dogs outdoors.
