Lakeside Drive Fenced Dog Park

Lakeside Drive Fenced Dog Park is a purpose-built, fully fenced off-leash park on Lakeside Drive in Alawa, run by the City of Darwin. The main draw is the fencing itself: 1500mm chain mesh around the whole site with separate zones for small and large dogs, so it works even for dogs that are not reliable off-leash elsewhere.

The dog setup

The park is monitored by the City of Darwin Animal Management Team, with regular ranger patrols and rules posted on site. Dogs stay inside the fenced boundary, owners remain in the park with their dogs under effective control, and females in heat are not permitted. Clean-up is expected: waste bags are supplied at the park, but carry your own in case the dispenser is empty. The small-dog and large-dog zones are separated, and keeping to the right one is what keeps play fair.

Worth knowing

Around 40 shade trees have been planted through the grounds, though some are still young, so shade is patchy rather than complete. Water troughs keep dogs hydrated, there is seating under shade, and public toilets are a short walk away. Bring a chair if you want to sit outside the tree cover. The ground is open grass split between the two sections.

Getting there

The park sits at 40 Lakeside Drive, Alawa NT 0810, near Alawa Primary School and about 2km from Casuarina Square. There is an informal car park next to the site, and footpaths connect it well to surrounding streets if you would rather walk in from a nearby suburb.

When to go

Mornings and late evenings are the quietest, especially early on a Sunday, which is the sensible window in the Top End climate anyway; midday heat is no friend to a working dog.

Muirhead Park Fenced Dog Park is the other big fenced option in the northern suburbs, with agility equipment and shaded shelters. For coffee before or after, She Oak Espresso at Casuarina is a few minutes away.
