Lakeside Drive Fenced Dog Park

Lakeside Drive Fenced Dog Park is a purpose-built, fully fenced off-leash park on Lakeside Drive in Alawa, run by the City of Darwin. The main draw is the fencing itself: 1500mm chain mesh around the whole site, with separate zones for small and large dogs, so it works even for dogs that are not reliable off-leash elsewhere.

The rules. The park is monitored by the City of Darwin Animal Management Team, with regular ranger patrols and rules posted on site. Dogs need to stay inside the fenced boundary, and owners are expected to clean up after their dogs. Dog waste bags are supplied at the park, but it is worth carrying your own in case the dispenser is empty.

What's there. Around 40 shade trees have been planted through the grounds, though some are still young, so shade is patchy rather than complete. Water troughs keep dogs hydrated, there is seating under shade, and public toilets are a short walk away. The ground is open grass, split between the small-dog and large-dog sections.

Getting there. The park sits at 40 Lakeside Drive, Alawa NT 0810, near Alawa Primary School and about 2km from Casuarina Square. There is an informal car park next to the site, and it is well connected to surrounding streets by footpaths if you would rather walk in from nearby suburbs.

Nearby with the dogs. Casuarina Square and the Rapid Creek Markets are both a few minutes' drive away and have cafes worth stopping at for a coffee before or after a run around. Pet-friendly holiday apartments and homes can also be found in Alawa, Brinkin and Casuarina if you are staying in the area.

When to go. Mornings and late evenings are the quietest, especially early on a Sunday. Sunday evening, Tuesday evening and Friday evening tend to be the busiest stretches. The middle of the day can get hot with only patchy shade, so aim for cooler hours if your dog runs warm.
