Third Rail Cafe Waverton

Third Rail Cafe sits at 4/100 Bay Road in Waverton, a short walk from the station, and the thing that decides a dog owner's morning is the seating: most of it is outdoors, and dogs are welcome in it. It is a casual, community-minded cafe running Five Senses specialty coffee and a brunch menu with a cult following for the fried chicken burger.

The dog setup

The outdoor area is sunny and open, and that is where dogs go. Blankets and heaters come out in colder weather, which is rare foresight for a dog-friendly courtyard and makes winter visits workable. Keep your dog under control and settled at the table; the space fills with regulars on weekends. Bring a water bowl just in case, though the staff are friendly and quick to help out.

Worth knowing

Beyond the chicken burger, the menu covers buttermilk pancakes, banana bread and acai bowls, with a laksa appearing for something different. Cold brew gets its own following. Hours run 6:30am to 2:30pm weekdays and 7:30am to 3pm weekends, so it is a breakfast-and-lunch venue that empties out mid-afternoon.

Getting there and parking

Waverton station is right nearby, which makes this an easy train-arrival cafe. Free street parking runs along Bay Road and the surrounding residential streets, though it tightens up on weekend mornings.

Pair it with

The Waverton Park to Balls Head Reserve Loop starts close by and is one of the better harbour-side walks on this side of the bridge, with plenty of leashed path for a pre-coffee leg-stretch. The North Spoon at McMahons Point is another dog-friendly stop if you are walking back toward the harbour.
