Dark Alley Coffee

Dark Alley Coffee hides in exactly the place its name promises: an alleyway off High Street in Wauchope, decked out with Star Wars memorabilia and pouring single origin coffee to a devoted local crowd. It trades mornings only, 7:30am to midday, and closes Tuesdays, so it runs on the rhythm of a true morning institution rather than an all-day cafe.

There is no published dog policy, but the seating is open air along the alley, and leashed dogs at the outdoor tables are a reported practice here rather than an official one. In practice that means your dog is welcome on the strength of the setup: fresh air, room to settle, and baristas visitors consistently describe as friendly. As always when a policy is informal, keep the leash short and the dog clear of the footpath flow.

Worth knowing

The single origin rotation is the draw for coffee people, and the banana bread and hot chocolate carry the non-caffeinated side. Midday closing makes this a first-thing stop: come early, order, and let the alley's shade do its work in summer. Street parking on High Street and the surrounding blocks is easy outside the peak morning window, and Wauchope's compact centre means everything is a short walk from the car.

Max: Coffee temple with Jedi decorations and a patch of alley I am allowed to lie in. The mornings-only rule is the only part I question.
