Tropical Vibes

Tropical Vibes sits on the Esplanade at Fisherman's Beach on Great Keppel Island, a beachfront oddity that combines a cafe, a gift shop with a giant shark's mouth for an entrance and the island's post office. It trades on weekends from 8am to around 4pm, though hours flex with the season and the ferry arrivals, so a quick check of their Facebook page before crossing is worthwhile.

The dog setup

Great Keppel Island is one of the few Queensland islands without national park restrictions, so dogs are allowed on the island itself, and the local ferries from Rosslyn Bay Marina carry them for a small fee. Confirm the pet policy with your operator (Keppel Konnections or Freedom Fast Cats) when booking. At the cafe, dogs are welcome in the open-air outdoor seating right off the sand. Keep your dog leashed and clear of the service path, and bring a portable water bowl for hot island days.

Worth knowing

The kitchen is known for oversized sub-style burgers, including a legendary Hawaiian version, plus wraps and genuinely good vegan and vegetarian options. Cold beer and coffee cover the rest. Because the venue doubles as the post office and general store, there is usually a stream of day-trippers passing the tables.

Getting there and parking

The island is car-free, so parking worries end at the Rosslyn Bay Marina carpark on the mainland. From the Fisherman's Beach drop-off, the cafe is an easy walk along the Esplanade, sand underfoot for part of it.

Pair it with
