Benilato at The Old Pacific is an authentic Italian gelato cart in Newrybar, NSW, set within a rustic collective of artisans and makers at 15 Old Pacific Highway. The single reason it works for dog owners is the outdoor courtyard space where well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome while you order.

The dog setup. Dogs can join you in the outdoor areas and courtyards at The Old Pacific, and there is space around the entrance for them to wait. They are not permitted inside the small artisanal shops themselves, so plan to stay outside with your dog. Water bowls are sometimes available in the area but not guaranteed, so bring your own. Keep your dog leashed at all times given the roadside setting directly off the Old Pacific Highway.

Known for. Handcrafted gelato made from family recipes, with flavours like Sicilian cassata, sea-salted caramel, and macadamia and white chocolate. Dairy-free and gluten-free options are available. The surrounding collective includes boutique shops selling clothing, homewares, and antiques.

Getting there. Street parking is available along the Old Pacific Highway, with small gravel areas sometimes accessible in front of the shops. It is an easy detour between Byron Bay and Ballina.

Nearby with the dogs. Woods Bangalow is a few minutes away for a proper cafe sit-down. Clunes Cafe is another nearby option. For a beach run after gelato, head to the Belongil Beach South Dog Exercise Area in Byron Bay.

The highway is right there and the parking is roadside, so keep a short leash and do not let attention wander near the gravel pull-off areas.

Benilato currently operates Wednesdays from 3pm to 7pm, but schedules can change. Confirm current hours before making the trip.
