Yanchep Dog Beach

Yanchep Dog Beach runs south from the Nautical Court beach access at Compass Park, roughly 50 minutes north of Perth, and it gives dogs about 1.5 kilometres of white sand with mostly calm, clear water. It stays noticeably quieter than the dog beaches closer to the city, which is the reason locals make the drive north.

Leash status

The off-leash zone starts at the Nautical Court access and runs south along the beach, open 24 hours a day under City of Wanneroo rules. Keep the leash on along the coastal paths and around the beach entrance, and carry one with you at all times. The big one to know: Yanchep Lagoon, the popular swimming spot further down the coast, is off limits to dogs entirely, so do not drift that way with an unclipped lead.

Max: know your boundary before you unclip. The off-leash stretch is south of the Nautical Court access, and the lagoon swimming area is a hard no for dogs.

Water and terrain

At low to mid tide a wide, shallow sandy shelf forms, which suits dogs still finding their feet in the ocean. The upper beach is soft, slow sand backed by natural dunes, so keep dogs off the vegetation and out of the fragile dune line. Currents pick up beyond the shallows, so watch dogs that are not strong swimmers, and bring water because there are no reliable taps on the beach.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Two Rocks Road and follow the coast to the car parks near Nautical Court and Compass Park, with parking close to the sand. Public transport does not get you near this stretch, so plan on the car. Weekday afternoons are the quiet window; weekend and public holiday mornings are the busy ones, and on hot days go early before the sand cooks.

Worth knowing

This is a raw, bring-your-own-everything beach: bins sit at the main access points and bag dispensers are usually provided, but there is no wash point or water station. The usual Wanneroo local laws apply, so dogs need to be registered, under effective control, and cleaned up after. Yanchep National Park sits just inland, but like all WA national parks it does not allow dogs, so keep that as a separate, dog-free trip.
