Yanchep Dog Beach

Yanchep Dog Beach runs south from the Nautical Court beach access at Compass Park, about 50 minutes north of Perth. It gives you roughly 1.5 kilometres of white sand and clear, mostly calm water, and it stays noticeably quieter than the dog beaches closer to the city, which is exactly why locals make the drive.

The rules. The off-leash zone starts at the Nautical Court beach access point and runs south. Keep the leash on along the coastal paths and around the beach entrance, and note that Yanchep Lagoon, the popular swimming spot further down the coast, is off limits to dogs entirely. Pick up after your dog and keep them under effective control - this is City of Wanneroo territory and the usual local laws apply.

The water and terrain. At low to mid tide a wide, shallow sandy shelf forms, which is ideal for dogs still finding their feet in the ocean. The sand is soft and slow going higher up the beach, and natural dunes back the whole stretch, so keep dogs off the vegetation. Currents can pick up beyond the shallows, so watch dogs that are not strong swimmers.

What's there. Bins at the main access points, free parking close to the sand, and not much else. There are no reliable water taps, so bring a bottle and a bowl for the dog, especially in summer.

Getting there. Drive in via Two Rocks Road and follow the coast to the car parks near Nautical Court and Compass Park. This is a drive-to beach - public transport does not get you close, so plan on the car.

Nearby with the dogs. Yanchep has a small but genuinely dog-friendly food scene. Lil' Sistas does pup cups and dog treats at its outdoor tables, Orion Cafe has dog-friendly outdoor seating with ocean views above the lagoon, and Yanchep Central Kebabs & Pizza covers the post-beach feed. One to skip: Yanchep National Park is just inland, but like all WA national parks it does not allow dogs.

When to go. Weekend and public holiday mornings are the busy window; weekday afternoons are the quiet ones. Aim for low to mid tide for the sandy shelf, and go early on hot days before the sand cooks. Good for steady swimmers and dogs that like room to run.
