Sisters Beach is a coastal township on Tasmania's North-West coast, near Rocky Cape National Park, and its main township beach is a genuine off-leash exercise area with clear seasonal time windows.

The rules. Off-leash is allowed all year round in the primary exercise areas, but strict summer restrictions apply in the high-traffic swimming zone. From December to February, dogs are permitted on the main swimming beach only before 10:00am and after 6:00pm. East of the submarine pipe navigation markers, dogs are prohibited at all times to protect wildlife in the adjoining national park area. Off-leash dogs must be under effective voice control at all times, and owners must pick up all dog waste.

What's there. Dog waste bags and bins are provided at key beach access points. Ample free parking is available along East Boulevard and near the boat ramp. Public toilets and a barbecue area sit near the boat ramp and central beach. A general store on East Boulevard stocks refreshments for visitors, and a caravan park roughly 15 minutes away accepts pets.

Getting there. Sisters Beach is roughly 20-25 minutes west of Burnie and Wynyard via the Bass Highway, and about 15 minutes east of Stanley. The main access point is East Boulevard, which leads directly to beach parking. Public transport is limited, with the nearest major services in Wynyard, so a car is effectively required.

Watch-outs. The area east of the submarine pipe navigation markers is permanently dog-prohibited. Keep your dog on the council-managed foreshore and do not enter Rocky Cape National Park itself.

For the best off-leash run during summer, go early morning before 10am or evening after 6pm, which also lines up with the beach's quietest periods. Time your visit around low tide for the most usable sand for walking and exercise.
