Mount Eliza Beach Dog Off Leash Area

Mount Eliza's off-leash beach is a narrow, often secluded strip of sand below steep cliffs, with calm water that suits dogs who like a wade. It runs leash-free at all hours for most of the year, but like the rest of the Mornington Peninsula coast it has a summer ban during the middle of the day, so check the clock before December rolls around.

The rules. Two off-leash sections apply: the headland west of Canadian Bay Road across to the Canadian Bay Club, and a stretch from Williams Road to Freemans Road. From March to November dogs are off-leash at all times. Through summer (1 Dec to end of February) dogs are banned 10am to 6pm, with off-leash allowed 6pm to 10am. Keep dogs on lead until you reach the designated area and as you leave, and pick up after them to protect the wildlife and other users.

Getting there. Access is by steep stairs from the road, either at the end of Canadian Bay Road or via the path at 15 Freemans Road. Parking is limited residential street parking near the access points, so it pays to arrive early. By public transport, Frankston is the nearest station, then a 781 or 782 bus toward the village and a walk down.

What's there. Waste bins are generally at the access points, but there are no water taps or dog amenities on the sand itself. Bring your own water bowl.

The water and terrain. Rocky at the shoreline turning to soft sand a few metres out, with calm water good for a swim. At high tide the beach narrows right down, so aim for low or mid tide for room to move.

When to go. Weekday mornings are quietest. Weekends draw a crowd, particularly Sunday evenings. Confirm current rules on the Mornington Peninsula Shire site, since seasonal dates can shift.
