Corinella Dog Beach

Corinella Dog Beach sits on the calm eastern shore of Western Port Bay, about 90 minutes southeast of Melbourne. The designated off-leash stretch runs roughly 800 metres along what locals call Corinella Back Beach, starting about 90 metres south of the Beach Street access stairway and heading southeast toward O'Connor Road, and it is off-leash around the clock within that zone.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies at all times to the sanded area from the dune edge to the water within the signed 800-metre stretch. Outside it, including near the main jetty and other town beaches, dogs stay on-leash. The dunes and coastal vegetation are strictly off limits at all times to protect shorebird habitat, carry a leash, and keep your dog under effective voice control. Bass Coast Shire Council tightens rules during peak summer, so check its site before a January visit.

Worth knowing

Western Port Bay is shallow and sheltered, which suits paddlers more than wave dogs. Low tide pulls the water back to expose big mudflats and shallow pools, great for sniffing and splashing but guaranteed to produce a muddy dog; high tide brings water to the sand line deep enough for a proper swim. Low to mid-tide is when this beach is at its best.

Max: time it with the tide. Low tide turns this into a sensory playground of mudflats and shallows, but you will be hosing off a very dirty dog before it gets back in the car.

Getting there and parking

Head to Beach Street in Corinella for foreshore parking near the beach access stairways. Public transport is limited, with V/Line coaches serving nearby towns, so a car is the practical option with a dog. Waste bag dispensers and bins sit at the main Beach Street access points, the foreshore reserve behind the beach has picnic tables and shelter, and public toilets are near the jetty.

Close by with the dogs

The Corinella General Store is a short walk for coffee and pies, and the Corinella Foreshore Caravan Park has pet-friendly sites and cabins, confirm when booking. Further down the bay, Ventnor Dog Beach adds a Phillip Island option.
