Corinella Dog Beach

Corinella sits on the calm eastern shore of Western Port Bay, roughly 90 minutes southeast of Melbourne. The designated off-leash stretch runs about 800 metres along what's known locally as Corinella Back Beach, starting roughly 90 metres south of the Beach Street access stairway and heading southeast toward O'Connor Road. It's off-leash at all times within that zone, making it one of the few around-the-clock dog beaches on the Bass Coast.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted at all times on the sanded area — from the dune edge to the water — within the signed 800-metre stretch. Outside that zone, including near the main jetty and other town beaches, dogs must be on-leash. The sand dunes and coastal vegetation are strictly off-limits at all times to protect shorebird habitat, and you must carry a leash and maintain effective voice control. Bass Coast Shire Council does tighten rules during peak summer season, so check their website before heading down in January.

The water and terrain. Western Port Bay is calm and shallow, which makes it ideal for dogs that like to paddle rather than swim against anything. At low tide, the water pulls back to reveal massive mudflats and shallow pools — brilliant for sniffing and splashing, but expect a muddy dog. At high tide, the water comes right up to the sand line and is deep enough for a proper swim. Low to mid-tide is when this beach is at its best.

What's there. Waste bag dispensers and bins at the main Beach Street access points. The Corinella Foreshore Reserve sits just behind the beach with grassed areas, picnic tables, seating and sheltered spots. Public toilets are near the foreshore and jetty. The Corinella General Store is a short walk away for coffee, pies and sandwiches. If you're staying longer, the Corinella Foreshore Caravan Park has pet-friendly sites and cabins — confirm when booking.

Getting there. Roughly 90 minutes from Melbourne via the M1 and South Gippsland Highway (A420), or about 45 minutes from Cranbourne. Head to Beach Street in Corinella for foreshore parking near the beach access stairways. Public transport is limited — V/Line coaches service nearby towns but a car is the practical option with a dog.

When to go. Early mornings and late afternoons year-round for fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Summer and school holidays bring significantly more foot traffic, so solid recall is essential if you're visiting then. A weekday morning at low tide in the shoulder seasons is the sweet spot — quiet, cool, and maximum beach to run on.
