Wardell Walkabout Heritage Trail

Wardell's heritage trail is a self-guided walk through a small Richmond River village, past 19th-century timber buildings from its days as a cedar-getting and river-trade settlement. Dogs can come along on a lead, and the walk is flat the whole way.

The rules

Ballina Shire Council requires dogs to be on a leash and under effective control on public streets and footpaths. Treat this as an on-lead walk from start to finish.

What the walk is like

The route follows the village's concrete footpaths and grass verges around Richmond Street and the streets nearby. Along the way you pass heritage-listed buildings, views of the Richmond River and the Wardell bridge.

It is easy, low-impact walking, which makes it a good sniff walk for older dogs or a gentle leg-stretch on a drive through the region.

Water and shade

Street trees and buildings throw some shade, but much of the village streetscape is open. Water and dog bins on the route are not confirmed, so bring a bowl, a bottle and bags.

Street parking is easy to find around the township near the start of the walk.

When to go

Pick a cooler morning or late afternoon in summer, given how exposed the streets are. It suits a dog that enjoys a slow, sniffy wander more than one that needs a run.
