Pet policy
Dogs on lead on the common's bush tracks; informal use does not make it an off-lead area, and horses share the trails (Lithgow City Council).
Portland Common covers roughly 300 hectares of bushland on the western edge of Portland, reached off Reservoir Road. Dirt fire trails and bush tracks wind through it, and dogs walk on lead.
Lead rules
The common is managed with Lithgow City Council and a local trust. Locals use the trails informally, but it is not a signed off-lead area, so keep the lead on.
On the trails
The surface is unsealed earth throughout, through open bush and pine stands past old reservoir works. The common links west toward Sunny Corner State Forest.
Horse riders use the same trails. Bring water and bags, as no facilities are listed out on the common.
Max: Horses share these trails. Shorten my lead and step off to the side when riders come through.
Who it suits
It suits fit dogs that enjoy a longer bush wander. If yours needs an off-lead run first, Lithgow City Council's designated area on Williwa Street is in Portland too.
