Porepunkah Riverside Park Walk

The river walk from Riverside Park in Porepunkah follows the Ovens River, crosses a suspension footbridge and the old Porepunkah Bridge, and opens up views of Mount Buffalo. Dogs are welcome, on lead through the park and township.

Lead rules

Alpine Shire Council has a gazetted dogs-on-lead area covering the Porepunkah township, including Riverside Park itself. Further out along the connecting tracks, outside that zone, dogs may be off lead under effective control.

Check the signs before you unclip.

The walk

The route mixes formed gravel and dirt riverside paths with sealed sections of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. There are loop options, including one toward Solly Lane.

Shallow wading spots and sandy banks give dogs easy access to the river on warm days.

Getting started

Park at Riverside Park, off Nicholson Street and the Great Alpine Road. Toilets, bins, a playground and shaded picnic shelters under mature trees are near the entrance, and the town's cafes and pubs are just across the road.

Pepsi: The Ovens River has shallow edges for a cool-off. Carry fresh water for drinking as well.

When to go

Summer is when the river matters most, and the big trees in the park help. The easy paths suit most dogs, with the rail trail on hand if you want to keep going.
