Main Yarra Trail(Burnley)

Burnley sits on one of the greener stretches of the Main Yarra Trail, the long shared path that follows the river from the city out towards Templestowe. Dogs are allowed, but on the path itself they stay on lead.

Lead rules

Different authorities look after different sections, among them Yarra City Council, the City of Stonnington, Parks Victoria and Melbourne Water. The common rule is a lead on the narrow shared path and in sensitive conservation reserves.

Off-lead time belongs in the parks the trail passes, where signs mark the designated areas.

The walk

Around three quarters of the trail is concrete or bitumen, with the rest firm gravel and the occasional boardwalk. Through Burnley you walk under eucalypts beside the river bends, with the city skyline showing through the trees.

Max: The path is narrow and shared with bikes. Short lead, and step aside when riders come through.

Make a day of it

Two signed off-lead areas sit close by, the Kevin Bartlett Reserve Dog Off Leash Area and the Golden Square Bicentennial Park Dog Off Leash Area.

When to go

The trail is long, so pick a stretch that suits your dog and turn back when they have had enough. The sealed sections are kind to older dogs and handle wet days well.
