Orara East State Forest

Orara East State Forest rises behind Coffs Harbour, reached via Bruxner Park Road and Scenic Drive near Sealy Lookout. Unlike the neighbouring national parks, it lets dogs walk the rainforest tracks on lead.

Lead rules

Forestry Corporation of NSW manages the forest, and dogs must be on a leash at all times. That protects wildlife and keeps other walkers comfortable.

The walk

Tracks such as the Rainforest Loop run under subtropical rainforest, towering flooded gums and giant strangler figs. Listen for fruit doves overhead.

The ground is natural and uneven, with roots, leaf litter and occasional timber or stone steps. The dense canopy keeps it shaded and cooler than the coast in warm months.

Max: Bins are only at the car parks and picnic areas, and there is no reliable water on the tracks. Carry water, a bowl and bags.

Getting started

The Sealy Lookout car park is the main hub, with accessible spaces. Afterwards, The Secret Garden Cafe in Boambee is a dog-friendly stop.

When to go

Summer is the time to use that canopy, when exposed coastal walks get too hot. Steps and roots make it better for fit, sure-footed dogs than frail ones.
